Angular (Foreground) planets - interpretation resources

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:52 pm

The following interpretations are from The New Instant Astrologer by myself and Tom Stanton. They are not the best I can do, and in fact are rather clumsy. They're nonetheless pretty accurate. I'm posting each in a separate post so that correlative information can be appended within each section over time.

UPDATE 10/13/07: I've started updating and reorganizing these and will continue as time permits. Therefore, some of them are no longer from TNIA (those in bulleted form).

NOTE to SELF: The red notebook has extensive further notes on all of these. Access them when it comes time to rewrite these interpretations.

SUN foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:53 pm

SUN FOREGROUND ("The Hero")
 • The Sun provides LIGHT and WARMTH to planets in our Solar System. Similarly, solar people are warm, friendly, generous, sharing the light of their personalities with the world (often in a paternal, possibly controlling, sense).
 • CORE THEME: Usually aware that they have a definite direction, target, or DESTINY in life - feel they were put on Earth to perform a special mission which they must discover and expedite. Until they discover it, driven by a "SEEKER theme" (cf. Hero myth).
 • Vitality is strong. Assertive. Often ACTING confident (actual confidence depending on their maturity).
 • At their best: "in charge of themselves" and do remarkably well in charge of others. Leaders, born commanders (especially if Sun aspects Mars).
 • At their worst: Bossy, demanding, (unstated?) sense of entitlement.
 • Need for CENTRICITY: attract a circle of "satellites" to surround themselves. (Can mean: selfish, expects others' world to revolve around THEM.)
 • Attracted to socially acceptable and useful institutions. (Acute sense of civic responsibility.) Relate naturally to traditional power structures.
 • Has a firm belief in a Supreme Power in the Universe and some form of afterlife. (NEED FOR IMMORTALITY is key motivation to most solar traits.)
STATS: Sun not necessarily foreground for murderers, but avoids remote background.

Notebook #93 observations: Generally indicates narcissism; but mostly they are a strong, positive bunch. Egoic energies appear to be much more dominant and obvious with Sun on MC/Asc than IC/Dsc.

[quote-"Fagan & Firebrace"][If born with Sun angular] ...he will tend to forge a path for himself in life as he itches to rule and command others. If... he is born when the Sun is remote from the angles, these qualities will not be obvious and may even be absent.

If the natal Sun is foreground and the Moon in the background the native will be a self-made man, determined and possibly ruthless. This is especially noticeable when the Sun is [in a Hub constellation] when he may heed no counsel other than his own.
EBERTIN (compilation of useful theories)
POS: The will to live, the urge to rule, the striving for an objective, organization, the ability to make a decision
NEG: Lack of vitality and will-power, lack of determination and organization, indecision or vacillation. [NOTE: These negatives are traits of an absent or weak Sun, not an afflicted one. - JAE]

U.S. PRESIDENTS:
ASC: Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Abraham Lincoln, Chester A. Arthur
MC: James Polk
IC: James Madison, Gerald Ford
DSC: Dwight Eisenhower, Barack Obama
OTHER: U.S. Grant, Ronald Reagan
[Lincoln and Eisenhower are some pretty mild-manner dudes here! A couple were decisively successful generals before becoming President, and there's even a football hero in the mix. So the underlying leadesrhip temperament is present, probably the charisma and force of character to direct a nation through difficult times. What we can't see just from the solar placement is whether this translates into successful leadership.]

MOON foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:53 pm

MOON FOREGROUND ("The Muse")
 • APPETITE is the common theme for most foreground Moon traits. ("Nurture" theme is primarily in terms of literal or metaphorical FEEDING.)
 • Adaptive plasticity in response to varying social, psychological, and environmental conditions.
 • Strong sexual appetites. Highly responsive to sexual stimuli or suggestion. (Most "sex kitten" celebrities have Moon on an angle.)
 • Living in constant need of stimulation - but it may be of the mind as much as the senses, so they appear active, curious, inquiring.
 • Very responsive to affection and friendship. (It lights them up like flipping a light switch!)
 • Sensitive, receptive (touchy, moody). Many have heightened psychic sensitivities. (Most are empathic, very responsive to others' emotions. Some are actively telepathic.)
 • Tender, vulnerable. Can be overwhelmed by others' feelings, especially judgments, displeasures, criticism.
 • Most MEN (and some women) shield themselves as early as infancy & appear guarded, intellectual, distant, disconnected.
 • Infantile and controlled by REACTIVITY to the extent they are disconnected from their empathic and other feelings.
 • Prone to periods of self-doubt and pessimism.
 • Readily ADAPTS to conditions, circumstances, events. (Personality formation from "responsive adaptation" is the primary function of the Moon.)
 • "Chameleon," conforms image and mannerisms to context, unconsciously takes up accents and stylization.
 • Amiable, accommodating, obliging, tolerant. Responsive, compliant, malleable, shifting. Easily wears a "mask," adopts a roll, acts (giving advantages in sales, service, performance, politics, and other public-facing occupations).
 • Easily influenced, overly impressionable.
 • At home before an audience. (Many are too shy, but they have the natural talent.) May "make a performance out of everything."
 • Gauquelin character traits include "fashionable, worldly, rather snobbish, superficial." (While conceivable as a "putting on airs" variation of the "putting on an act," I don't find these actually descriptive of angular Moon people I personally know.)
 • Natural rapport with the public (celebrities, politicians).
 • Talent for taking the foundations of others, building on them, improving them; thus, they make the best editors, arrangers, developers, promoters, assistants.
 • Imaginative, strong powers of imagery. (Gauquelin: "poetic, dreaming, imaginative")
GAUQUELIN CHARACTER TRAITS FOR FOREGROUND MOON:
Amiable, many friends, simple, good company, good-hearted, accommodating, disorderly, absent-minded, generous, imaginative, easily influenced, fashionable, worldly, nonchalant, poetic, dreaming, obliging, rather snobbish, superficial, tolerant.

[quote-"Fagan & Firebrace"]Should the Moon be angular especially in one of the weak [Spoke] constellations... and the Sun cadent, the native will be weak, having little stamina and swayed by the opinions of others.
EBERTIN (compilation of useful theories)
POS: Motherliness, domesticity, prudence, mobility, changeableness, adaptation, sense of form, memory.
NEG: Repressed motherliness, love of comfort, impressionability, a carefree attitude or an easy-going nature, moodiness.

GAUQUELIN PROFESSIONAL RESULTS:
HIGH: Politicians, writers
LOW: Soldiers, sports champions

OTHER STATS: Sidereal astrologers have more Moon aspects overall than Tropical astrologers (Eshelman).

Notebook #93 observations: (Moon on Midheaven) Very strong on service.

More elaborate discussion from another post:
Jim Eshelman wrote:I have an angular Moon and have known a lot of angular Moon men (and several Cancer Sun men) who have a pattern I well recognize in myself... Foreground Moon children are hyper-sensitive. It takes longer for their nervous systems to "click" that they are not literally the same as their mother. (I don't mean years, I mean extra months.) Most importantly, they respond to every impression, psychological nuance, emotional shift and tone minutely. It is this ability to be so minutely attentive to and responsive to other people's feelings, moods, psychic states, subtle impressions, etc., that has them singled out as gifted early in life - nearly every child, whose chart I have, that was in the early years of the Gifted Children's Society (that started in Southern California and spread to big cities around the country - parents with children who were miles ahead of their school grade and bored to tears, that were provided other options by the program) - nearly every one of these was an angular Moon child.

Two or three decades later, psychologists started writing that the old "gifted" category was not so much intellectual brilliance (though most of them had that, too) as this hyper-sensitivity to people, moods, and environments.

In fact, the majority of men with angular Moons, and a majority of Cancer men, come across as hyper-intellectual... You keep wanting to find the intellect in the chart. It might be there but, primarily, the "intellect" is in their absorption, rapid adaptation, feeling and perceiving everything acutely AND THEN defending against it - an intellectual front, an insensitive wall, to ward away ALL THAT STUFF THAT'S BOMBARDING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM... The most important thing to know, first, about this boy is that he is picking up on and responding to everything... [Mother's] moods, her shifting impressions, her opportunistic frustrations of the moment are going to be felt by the child as condemnation (not that something else needs her attention at that point). "Condemnation" is not too strong a word for at least some of these inadvertent shifts of attention. Therefore, what's REALLY important from Mom is authenticity. None of this, "I'm trying to be a good mother and, yes, I have other things on my mind and, yes, I need to put on a strong smile and pretend that in this very moment when I should be doing three other things, I'm here only for this crying child." No, authenticity is crucial, otherwise the child will be trained to not trust the impressions or not trust people. One needs to remind kind AND know that the child's whole nervous system will pick up on any well-meaning {bs} (without knowing it's well-meaning: that's a value judgment, and the ability for those hasn't grown yet).

[Ugh! Many had the disadvantage of coming into office in extremely difficult times. The problem is, almost none of them rose to the occasion. Grant, a magnificent general, had the task of reconstruction in his lap and failed miserably amidst weakness and graft. Buchanan probably had no realistic chance of preventing Civil War, and he fell rapidly to the low expectations of his term. Hoover inherited the conditions rapidly spiralling into the Great Depression and, despite doing many of the things that later marked his successor's New Deal, he basically never stood a chance of recovery. The others... well, draw your own conclusion.]

MERCURY foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:54 pm

MERCURY FOREGROUND
 • Alert, attentive, observant, strategic, analytic. Mentally sharp. Some are quick, never missing a thing; others are patiently, quietly studious. Both groups are hard to fool and probably know more about you than you think they do.
 • Eyes reflect keen, alert, sharp, clever faculties even into advanced age.
 • "Nervous" types (may be anxious or worriers). This may lead to alcohol or drug abuse, smoking, etc. [STATS: Foreground Mercury is part of one form of the profile for alcoholics (Bradley)]
 • Contrary to stereotypes, a high percentage of them (perhaps as many as half) are easy-going physically. For most who aren't, it's a drug issue.
 • Low emotional affect. Most of the time you don't have a clue what's really going on with them. Informational communication comes far more easily to them than emotional communication.
 • Prone to easy boredom unless they have regular mental stimulation. (Most are careful to arrange their lives so that there is rarely a shortage of stimulation.)
 • Talented at precise, detailed work. Manually skilled, mechanical aptitude.
 • Oriented toward commerce. Naturals at "doing business." (Whatever their particular field, they probably are good at handling the business aspect of it.)
 • CURIOSITY drives their SEXUAL choices as much as any other single factor; also, very skilled hands.
A RECENT OBSERVATION... A large percentage of angular Mercury people I know are surprisingly easy to offend. Their response isn't to become overtly emotionally reactive so much as just to vanish. I'm still trying to put my finger on the exact mechanism here. A few (not the majority) are just plain touchy. Most seem offended primarily at the idea that someone got a fact wrong about them, and aren't necessarily emotionally sensitive to the remark. Most are just plain hard to read about whether they are kidding, offended, or unaffected (very little emotional affect, thus limited data on how they are reacting to something). Still looking at this one.

OBSERVATION: Quite a number of the most successful professional pop musicians (and some other similar entertainers) have foreground Mercury. Given their commercial success, I'm inclined to think it just shows keen business acumen. The group includes names like Madonna, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, comedians of the like of Johnny Carson and Robin Williams, directors who know the business as well as Clint Eastwood and Robert Altman, as well as straight commercial figures like Rupert Murdoch. (These are just a few, but they're quite representative.)
Fagan & Firebrace wrote:Mercury in the foreground of any map awakens and activates the mental processes of the native. Under this influence he imparts to others what he knows. According to his station in life he may, for example, preach sermons, give lectures, instruct others, or write, debate, criticize, discuss, or publish.
STATS: Foreground Mercury is part of one form of the profile for alcoholics (Bradley).

GARTH ALLEN on the MERCURY PERSONALITY (Kid Gloves)
“The most conspicuous trait of the individual whose natal Mercury is dominant is the youthful intentness of his mannerisms and overall appearance. He just doesn’t look at home in a rocking chair unless he is using it as an observation perch. His head shifts position from time to time, often with a jerk, in order not to miss a trick in the world around him. His eyes and face have a self-conscious motility reminiscent of bird behavior. Even in advanced age this aura of youngishness can be striking – the quick physical movement, the ballbearing sweep of the line of vision, the promptness of every response. At school, he seemed somewhat younger than the average of his classmates. His follicles have perseverance and he is apt to sport a head of hair when the pates of most of his friends have long since resembled billiard balls.

“The speed of his physical reactions has a mental counterpart so that he tends to make up his mind on the spur of the moment and expresses himself as though he never feels the need to ponder a decision. Mercurians like to keep busy just for the sake of doing something as they are creatures to whom boredom can mean psychological disaster. They impress others as either temperamentally unstable or too susceptible to distraction to be reliable and this impression has cost many Mercurians a deserved promotion, or, for that matter, a job for which they are eminently suited. There is nary a baritone in the purebred Mercurian population for this planet’s vocal range is a few keys higher than the norm. The Mercurian has an opinion about everything under the Sun and is quick to react with an unpremeditated often unpredictable attitude – “That’s nice!” or “How terrible!” or “Naturally!” He’s a born skeptic and when interested in religion is likely to approach his own creed with a “Methodist” viewpoint, i.e., the Kingdom of Heaven should be founded here in this world rather than looked for in the sky. He has a natural resistance against being fooled, thanks to his skeptical streak, and often possesses a business instinct.

“The whole personality of the typical Mercurian – physique and psyche considered together – appears oriented to his nervous system. It is difficult to find a true Geminian or Virgoan who does not have at least one physical allergy. There appear to be more alcoholics born under Gemini than under any other constellation; alcoholism itself is medically definable as a chemical sensitivity or, in plain words, an allergy. Similarly there are more health-food faddists and vegetarians born in Virgo than under any other constellation. The likes and dislikes of the Mercurian are clear-cut and exacting, especially where the telltale neurotic foods arc concerned (eggs, onions, squash, milk, etc.).

“The overresponse of all their physical functions reflects this emphasis on their neural organization, for they are usually hypersensitive to pain, easily raise welts quickly when bruised or bitten by mosquitos, suffer cold and closeness earlier than others, and have poor resistance against skin ailments. The proclivity to nervousness, in the ordinary usage of the word, is the reason why Mercurians tend to be smokers and drinkers, more easily develop psychosomatic symptoms, and get unduly excited over what others consider trivialities. Mercurians are likable people; it’s difficult to stay mad at anybody who can whistle and it’s impossible to dislike someone who at fifty enjoys flying a kite with the neighborhood kids or who would, if he could, pay his way into the movies with the pop bottle deposits, just for the heck of it!”

EBERTIN (excerpts - compilation of useful theories)
POS: Good grasp or understanding of a subject, sound judgement, critical ability, dexterity in expression and in writing, mediation, diplomacy, general intellectual abilities...
NEG: ...the tendency to diffuse one's energy into too many channels, inhibitions in speech and in writing, overdevelopment or weakness of intellect.

VENUS foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:54 pm

VENUS IN FOREGROUND
 • Charming, attractive, popular. Friendly, amiable, congenial, pleasing. Gracious, well-mannered, considerate.
 • Even the men have a gracious gentleness, and often a softness, about them.
 • Flirtatious, highly affectionate. - More naturally sexually receptive than aggressive.
 • Very loving, care-taking. May have a "mothering" attitude toward friends in need of help. [OBSERVATION: Many teachers.]
 • Pleasurable stimulation of their senses, and exposure to beauty in general, are very high priorities in their lives. Self-indulgent. (Likes travel.)
 • Kind, benevolent. Oriented away from cruelty, harm, and the infliction of pain (except when it is part of their eros, by mutual consent). [STATS: Quite scarce in horoscopes of murderers.]
 • Require harmony in their lives - circumstances which to them are easy and harmonious, and which reduce their stress and friction. (They are willing to increase others' stress levels, if necessary, to get and retain this.)
 • Perception of justice (personal or social) is basic to their sense of the rightness of their worlds. Can be stubborn and fierce in the face of perceived injustice, being treated unfairly, etc.
 • Their sense of justice permitting, they gravitate toward the beautiful, not the coarse; the pleasurable, not the painful; and the peaceful and tranquil, not the violent and turbulent. (Absence a perception of injustice, generally not known as angry or bad-tempered.)
 • Overall orientation to LIFE. Grand affinity with Mother Nature and the natural processes which perpetuate existence.
 • "The Venusian is like a living sponge, absorbing every passing condition of his or her environment, reacting with exaggerated pleasure to the pleasant and with painful recoil in the face of the unpleasant." (Garth Allen)
STATS: Scarce for murderers (Bradley). Large representation of teachers (Eshelman notebooks).

GAUQUELIN CHARACTER TRAITS: Charming, amiable, loved, gracious, kind, benevolent, comical, elegant, looks young, poet, successful, likes travel. Lesser level of significance: To please, good manners, considerate. Significantly low: Aggressive, choleric, excessive, lively, quarrelsome.
Fagan & Firebrace wrote:When in elevation or in the foreground at birth, th native is dominated by his love for others - nothing else matters. It is the motive of his existence. Known as the "venerable" Venus in advanced years, the native may, if in a position to do so, become noted for his philanthropy and charity. In his youth there is something of the Casanova. When in propinquity to one of the inactive places, love is apt to occupy a subordinate place in his life. So placed, marriage is apt to be delayed or altogether denied.

The types of humanity which win the affection of the native may be deduced from the constellation occupied by Venus at birth. For instance, in Aries, the affections may be lavished on those who wield power, the politician, or military world. In Sagittarius, clergymen, doctors, and the titled. In Aquarius, those interested in out of the way subjects. The constellation often describes the fetishes of the frustrated.

MARS foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:55 pm

MARS FOREGROUND
Competition is the major trait of Mars, for these people constantly seek to prove themselves in battle, be it in war, in athletics, verbally, mentally, or any other way they can demonstrate that their skill and power are greater than those of another. They are physically motivated, needing to expend energy. Sex drives are intense and jealousies dominant. The Mars person needs room to move, for closed places or conditions stifle him. He is impulsive, often reckless with his own safety (especially if Saturn is not pronounced in the chart). He has courage, including the moral courage to defend his own beliefs. Manual and mechanical skills are normally present. He has a fiery physical constitution and the need to achieve a position of dominance and control over others.

MARS FOREGROUND (in preparation for revision of the above text, which I'm now gradually doing)
 • AGGRESSIVE, competitive, challenging, "needs to win" (combative, quarrelsome). They seek to prove themselves in battle, literal or figurative (war, athletics/games, verbally or mentally, in business, sexually - any way they can test themselves, demonstrate and hone skill and power, measure and improve their ranking, etc.). [STATS: Sports champions (Gauquelin).]
 • Sexually aggressive. Strong sex drive needs frequent satisfaction. (Also some striking examples of people known to "like it rough," including Marquis de Sade, Eva Braun, Adolf Eichman, Catherine de Medici, plus numerous examples from private files.)
 • In the business world, they demonstrate leadership and competitive excellent. [STATS: Business executives (Gauquelin).] For example, in the entertainment field, a number of Mars-foreground entertainers are known as much for being effective in business as for their other talents: Orson Welles, Arnold Schwarznegger, Barbra Stresiand, Charles Chaplin, Jodie Foster, Merv Griffin; add Rupert Murdoch). Among executives, add 12 U.S. Presidents, 5 of whom were generals.
 • Physically motivated, need to expend energy. Fiery physical constitution.
 • Needs to achieve a position of dominance and control over others.
 • Needs room to move. Closed places or conditions stifle Mars.
 • Impulsive, often reckless with own safety (especially if Saturn isn't strong).
 • Courage, including the moral courage to defend own beliefs.
 • Manual and mechanical skills.
 • Politicians with Mars foreground are known for energetic, outspoken, rousing rhetoric (e.g., Robert Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama, Ian Smith)
 • [STATS: Foreground Mars is part of one form of the profile for alcoholics (Bradley)]
 • (Incorporate Gauquelin character traits as appropriate:) Active, eager, reckless, courageous, dynamic, energetic, fiery, untiring, fighting, afraid of nothing, straightforward, strong, daring, valiant, full of vitality, lively, self-willed.
 • (Incorporate Gauquelin professional data as appropriate:) HIGH for soldiers, doctors. LOW for artists, writers
 • (Consider & incorporate Ebertin trait lists where found accurate:) (+) Will-power, active energy, courage, determination, enjoyment of work, the urge to do something. (-) Waste of energy, enjoyment of destruction, impulsiveness, ruthlessness, brutality. - Weakness, lack of energy.
 • (Incorporate Bradley statistical findings as appropriate:) Common for murderers.
 • (Other observations, use if confirmed.) Very few teachers (Eshelman notebooks). A surprising number of psychotics and near psychotics have a closely foreground Mars it seems (Eshelman notebooks, numerous examples - many due to extreme substance abuse).
GAUQUELIN CHARACTER TRAITS: Active, eager, quarrelsome, reckless, combative, courageous, dynamic, energetic, fiery, untiring, aggressive, afraid of nothing, straightforward, strong, daring, valiant, full of vitality, lively, self-willed.

GAUQUELIN PROFESSIONAL DATA:

Garth Allen AA 6/75 wrote:The rising-Mars type tends to be unusually active and physically assertive. Psychologically he feels the inner need to compete, rather than merge forces, with others. Where unable to compete, he belittles in order to cut opponents and envied associates down to size. He is forever taking cuts at the world, though does not normally recognize hostility for what it is.
Fagan & Firebrace wrote:Unpolished diamonds, rough, uncouth, loudmouthed, clamorous, noisy, wiry, muscular, untidy, prone to swearing and cursing, hot-headed, impetuous, brave, daring, reckless, spoiling for a fight, delighting in sport, machinery and mechanics, easily succumbing to temptation, exulting in conflict. These are some of the familiar characteristics of those born with Mars in the foreground. Fundamentally Mars is a "killer"; he destroys for the sheer love of it. The exercise of power gives him immense gratification but there is nothing essentially cruel or vindictive about him.
EBERTIN (compilation of useful theories)
POS: Will-power, active energy, courage, determination, enjoyment of work and fighting, the urge to do something.
NEG: Waste of energy, enjoyment of destruction, impulsiveness, ruthlessness, brutality. - Weakness, lack of energy.

Notebook #93 observations: With Mars on MC, probable serious authority issues (with parental patterns involved) are at stake here, although I have too small a list to be sure.

OBSERVATIONS: Very few teachers (Eshelman notebooks). A surprising number of psychotics and near psychotics have a closely foreground Mars it seems (Eshelman notebooks, numerous examples - many due to extreme substance abuse).

JUPITER foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:55 pm

JUPITER FOREGROUND
Positive, optimistic, and oriented to what is good and qualitative in life, the Jupiter person is ever trying to improve himself and his conditions. He is very likable, generous, congenial, and tolerant of others because, more than anything else, he wants to be liked, wants to be a success, wants to be important to someone. He supports the status quo and what is "proper" because it gets him what he wants. He has a way of "selling himself" to others. Luck seems to follow him through life. Is it any wonder he is good-humored, self-assured, and the champion of fair play (provided Jupiter isn't afflicted)? He carries an air of superiority, yet only becomes disgusted with less elegant types when they seek to upset established practice or violate his moral code. Jupiter invokes a fondness for ceremony, if not a specifically religious or ritualistic predliection. (ADD: Role-conscious, judgmental.)

JUPITER FOREGROUND (in preparation for revision of the above text)
 • Positive, optimistic, oriented to what is good and qualitative in life. Aspires to (or practices) a life of leisure and its perquisites.
 • Carries an air of superiority. Role-conscious, judgmental.
 • Ever trying to improve oneself and one's conditions.
 • Likable, generous, congenial, and tolerant of others. More than anything else, wants to be liked and to be important to someone.
 • Tends to be very giving/generous sexually.
 • Good-humored, self-assured, and (barring afflictions to Jupiter) the champion of fair play
 • Supports the status quo and what is "proper" (it gets him what he wants).
 • He has a way of "selling himself" to others.
 • Luck seems to follow Jupiter through life.
 • A foreground afflicted Jupiter commonly has inflamed greed or envy and “makes its own luck” through opportunism, shady ethics, or even crime.
 • Fondness for ceremony, possibly even a specifically religious or ritualistic predliection.
 • (Incorporate Gauquelin character traits as appropriate:) At ease, ambitious, opportunistic, authoritarian, talkative, likes to assert himself, sense of the comical, communicative, debonair, spendthrift, gay, gesticulating often, good-humored, independent, happy, worldly, prodigal, bantering, likable, vain.
 • (Incorporate Gauquelin professional data as appropriate:) HIGH for soldiers, jouranlists, actors, politicians. LOW for scientists, doctors.
 • (Consider & incorporate Ebertin trait lists where found accurate:) (+) The urge to expand or extend, enlargement, ownership or possession, satisfaction, harmony, justice, constructive inclinations, optimism, a social sense, moral and religious aspirations, the faculty to survey the whole. (-) Disharmony, injustice, quarrelsomeness, antisocial conduct, amoral behavior, immorality, the craving for pleasure, greed, a materialistic attitrude towards life.
 • (Incorporate Bradley statistical findings as appropriate:) Very scarce for murderers.
 • (Incorporate other listed findings below where confirmed.)

Fagan & Firebrace wrote:When placed in the foreground natally it generally indicates that the native is born a gentleman, having the benefits of good parentage and an excellent education. It could be that these advantages are attained through his own efforts in later years. Jupiter, at all times, stands for the best of everything. Hence those who are fortunate enough to be born when it is dominant usually go to the best schools, wear the most stylish clothes, belong to the best clubs, consort with the best people, or enter the best professions, often the church, the law, consular services, the army, or medicine. Those whose incomes are derived from the land, real estate, wills, legacies, bequests, or from the interest from money held in trust, usually have Jupiter natally configured with Saturn, whilst those who amass a fortune through their own efforts but more especially through speculation, have Jupiter configured with Uranus. For a time show business brings prosperity to those having Jupiter configured with Neptune, but the money is soon dissipated. Its configuration with Pluto savours of ill-gotten prosperity.
Garth Allen, AAM 6/56 wrote:A word about the connection of Jupiter with crimes of gain as contrasted wit crimes of vengeance or of erotic depravity. A powerful natal Jupiter that is badly laced with afflictions will often compel its owner to so crave the accouterments which signify social altitude that he may go to dishonorable extremes to satisfy this desire, even resorting to embezzlement or outright robbery. This is the rationale for the frequent prominence of Jupiter in the astrology of crime patterns... Every reader surely knows at least one individual of the afflicted Jupiter type whose eyes light up at every passing Cadillac and haberdashery window, but who cannot seem to save even a dollar a week toward ultimate lawful purchase of the coveted objects... It is the ergie of Jupiter in you that makes you feel a wee bit embarrassed when you are with new people you would like to impress favorably but have to let know that you work behind a counter or with a drill or beside a conveyor belt, and so on."
EBERTIN (compilation of useful theories)
POS: The urge to expand or extend, enlargement, ownership or possession, satisfaction, harmony, justice, constructive inclinations, optimism, a social sense, moral and religious aspirations, the faculty to survey the whole.
NEG: Disharmony, injustice, quarrelsomeness, antisocial conduct, amoral behavior, immorality, the craving for pleasure, greed, a materialistic attitrude towards life.

STATS: Very scarce for murderers (Bradley). In employment start charts, marks a superior worker; but they tend to gain allies so become hard to terminate (Quellas).

SATURN foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:57 pm

SATURN FOREGROUND
This person needs to be totally self-reliant, to stand on his own two feet, look the world in the face, and dare it to knock him down. Perhaps he recalls his childhood, and indeed most of his life, as a time of hardship. This is because the Saturn personality emphasizes in his own mind the negative side of a situation until he learns that no one will help him if he does not first help himself. Unless he overcomes strong feelings of inferiority, he restricts his own freedoms and limits his own happiness. The self-preservation instinct is strongly marked in these self-protective individuals. Often this causes them to shut others out of their lives emotionally, relating only on a cautious, reserved level. They seek out that which is stable, proven, and sure, hence their conservatism in the practical matters of day-to-day living.

URANUS foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:57 pm

URANUS FOREGROUND
Constant variation and novelty of experience are important to these strongly individualistic people. Freedom is their most valued treasure. Whether feeling the claustrophobia of closed quarters or the "call of the wind," to take to the road and be gone, they need plenty of breathing room. Inhibitions are cast aside as they seek new circumstances and a wide variety of experience. They have an inner excitability whch may result in nervous tension, but also makes them clownish, fun, and strongly original personalities. (ADD: "Seeker self." Use orienting reflex as basis for understanding Uranus neurologically.)

 • Strongly individualistic and original. Charting their own course.
 • Clownish, fun, "real characters."

 • "Seeker self." Cf. "orienting reflex" as basis for understanding Uranus neurologically.
 • Casts inhibitions aside as they seek new circumstances and a wide variety of experience.
 • Need plenty of breathing room, whether feeling the claustrophobia of closed quarters or the "call of the wind," to take to the road and be gone.
 • Inner excitability, may lead to chronic nervous tension.
 • (Consider & incorporate Ebertin trait lists where found accurate:) (+) Peculiarity, independence, love of freedom, independent action and ideas, enthusiasm for every thing that is new or modern, agility or motility, good powers of perception, intuition allied with objective judgement, easy excitability. A sense of rhythm. (-) An obstrinate nature, lack of adaptability, rebellion, revolutionary tendencies, an excitable nature, impulsive actions, strong emotional tensions, passion for innovation, changeability of character.
 • (Incorporate Bradley statistical findings as appropriate:) Moderately infrequent for murders
 • (Incorporate observations as appropriate:) Few teachers (Eshelman notebooks). - Uranus is not a mark of one particular ideology. (See examples of U.S. Presidents & Supreme Court justices.) What all (or nearly all) Uranus-angular Presidents have had in common is enormous courage and ingenuity. Significant military leadership was tied into generally exceptional resourcefulness, pragmatism, and charting their own way independent of ideology.

Notebook #93 observations: On MC: Overall, they are people who have a hard time "fitting in." (This is true to a lesser degree of the other angles.) On IC: I need to explore the relationship of attachment-connection to their independence etc. For example, in social and other groups, they seem more liikely to remain in the group and "act out," where the other angles are more likely to leave under similar situations.

GARTH ALLEN on the URANUS CHARACTER (Kid Gloves)
“The true Uranian simply is not blood-blinded, for he automatically appraises the character and worthiness of his flesh relative with the same unclouded eye by which he measures the mettle of a foreigner.”

“…there is a characteristic detachment from natural obligations and earthy relationships – often a complete repudiation of lineage and citizenship in the sense of being ‘in the world but not of it.’ The typical Uranian has a tendency toward being so dedicated to what he believes to be his predestined reason for having been born, he is apt to be heedless of his loved ones and careless about himself. At times a blessing to his progress, at other times a blight on his personality, the innate trait of impersonableness, the ability to think apart from personal equations, is the most conspicuous earmark of the Uranus-dominated individual. To the Uranian, his boss, the Pope, the minister, the cop, the President himself, ‘are, after all, just people.’ When the Uranian’s key planet is afflicted at birth, it is difficult to find anybody more arrogant and undesirable as a friend.”

“Uranus always goes head first, especially during the height of travail.”

[3 of the four with Uranus rising also had Pluto on the Midheaven. FDR was the exception.]
[Notice that Uranus is not a mark of one particular ideology. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were ideologically opposed on many key issues. Cf. Supreme Court judges, where Scalia, Alito, Roberts, Kennedy, and O’Connor all have foreground Uranus. – What all (or nearly all) Uranus-angular Presidents have had in common is enormous courage and ingenuity. Three were generals, and both Roosevelts demonstrated other significant military leadership - in most cases, that was tied into generally exceptional resourcefulness, pragmatism, and charting their own way independent of ideology.]

NEPTUNE foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:57 pm

NEPTUNE FOREGROUND
These people are highly sensitive, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. They seem to be emotionally over-responsive, tuning into others too acutely and not always clearly. On the positive side, this adds sympathy, compassion, and even psychic talents. On the other extreme, they exaggerate conditions in their minds and remain in a state of emotional insecurity. Neptune people want to be sure of situations before exposing themselves, because they are quite sensitive to rejection and afraid of betrayal. The Neptune person needs intense feelings around him at all times because he thrives on the emotional vitality around him. This generally makes him emotionally dependent on others. He dislikes change or surprise, disregarding new information which tends to contradict what he already "knows" to be true. Neptune lives in an idealistic world of hoped-for perfection which does not always materialize. He needs to channel his dreams and creative imagination in a practical direction. (ADD: Self-dramatization. "Merger Self.")

NEPTUNE FOREGROUND (in preparation for revision of the above text)
 • Highly sensitive - which is sometimes good and sometimes bad!
 • Emotionally over-responsive, tuning into others too acutely and not always clearly.
 • In general, easily "hooked," tempted, drawn in, etc.
 • On the positive side: sympathy, compassion, empathy, psychic talents
 • On the negative side: They exaggerate conditions in their minds and remain in a state of emotional insecurity. Self-dramatization. Quite sensitive to rejection and afraid of betrayal (or generally feeling exposed and vulnerable).
 • Naturally absorbs, assimilates, and replicates characteristics of others, molding themselves by the replication or identification.
 • Lives on own bubble-reality, highly committed to holding tenaciously onto their distinctive point of view on how the world works - almost impenetrable in this, impervious to others' logic. Most are quite passionate about those things that uniquely frame and occupy their reality.
 • Wants to be sure of situations before exposing themselves.
 • Needs intense feelings around him at all times. Thrives on ambient emotional vitality.
 • Emotionally dependent on others. "Merger Self" (contrast Uranus).
 • Misoneistic. Uncomfortable with change or surprise, disregarding new information which tends to contradict what is already "known" to be true.
 • Lives in an idealistic world of hoped-for perfection. (Neptune is the function of selective perception and selective vision, with all the good and bad inherent in these.)
 • Benefits from channeling dreams and creative imagination toward the practical.
 • (Consider & incorporate Ebertin trait lists where found accurate:) (+) Receptivity, fantasy or imagination ,sensitivity, contemplation, sympathetic understanding or compassionate sensitivity, a dreamy nature, an inclination to mysticism, mediumism. (-) Impressionability, sensitiveness, vagueness or lack of clarity, confusion, fanciful notions, deception, a lack of planning ability, a lie or a fraud.
 • (Incorporate Bradley statistical findings as appropriate:) High for murderers
 • (Incorporate other listed findings below where confirmed.)

PLUTO foreground

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun May 07, 2017 8:58 pm

PLUTO FOREGROUND
Pluto people are the loners of society, those unique individuals who refuse to melt into the mire of custom. They are the exceptions to the rule, writing their own codes of behavior if necessary. In order to escape constant persecution for being "different" from the masses, they draw within themselves and remain remote from the rest of the world. They are not essentially shy, but rather just do not wish to be bothered. Unless Pluto is afflicted, these folks are gentle and inoffensive, but may leave themselves open to abuse in some form. Though formal standards are generally disregarded, they have a strong faith in human dignity and will not tolerate inhumanity or unfair practices. They are individuals in constant search of meaning, agnostic because they attach themselves to no formal faith, yet possessing a deep spiritual potential for understanding.

PLUTO FOREGROUND (in preparation for revision of the above text)
 • The loners of society. Unique, often cantankerous individuals who refuse to melt into the mire of custom.
 • Whether personally or professionally, whether successful or not, they tend to be "black sheep," running their own path, singularly standing out from context.
 • The exceptions to the rule: Writes own code of behavior as necessary.
 • To escape constant persecution for being "different" from the masses, draw within self and remains remote from the rest of the world.
 • Not essentially shy - just don't wish to be bothered.
 • Usually gentle and inoffensive, but leaves self open to abuse.
 • Formal standards are generally disregarded as arbitrary, but they have a strong faith in human dignity and will not tolerate inhumanity or injustice (to their own keen moral code).
 • In constant search of meaning. Agnostic because they attach themselves to no formal faith, yet possessing a deep spiritual potential for understanding.
 • (Incorporate Bradley statistical findings as appropriate:) High for murders. "Its role in the climatology of crime is unquestionable" (Bradley)

STATS: High for murders (Bradley): "Its role in the climatology of crime is unquestionable."

GARTH ALLEN on the PLUTO CHARACTER(Kid Gloves)
“The singling-out function of Pluto expresses itself as intense individuality, in a setting of oneself apart from the common throng, not in the aristocratic sense of elitism but in the antisocial sense of to hell with it all. Pluto-dominated souls suffer spiritually when being counted as mere members of a herd. Their contention against society is usually a matter of trying to keep from being dissolved by the gastric juices of Establishment mores and politics. They can be frighteningly cruel and unfeeling if Pluto is linked with a malefic planet, in which case the antisociality can take on diabolic forms. By contrast, Pluto coupled with a benefic can take on or radiate utterly angelic qualities. The dearest, most inoffensive souls you encounter in life are apt to have strong, unafflicted Plutos. No, Pluto by itself is not a malefic; it is more sinned against than sinning. People noted for their genuine niceness and lack of guile are born under Pluto interweavings with other benefic planetary forces.

“People who are strongly Plutonian in makeup and behavior often dress garishly and in defiance of majority tastes even though they are the essentially timid, nonaggressive type. They can be the prime examples of sheer high camp – innocent and ingenuous at the same time they are being what polite conformists consider outrageous in manner and viewpoint. They seem completely at home in the forest primeval, for they have natural rapport with other forms of life, just as they can seem part of the décor of a bohemian coffeehouse. Don’t misunderstand: they are not of the great unwashed ilk who consider themselves children of Nature and seekers of Truth. Rather, they are the real thing in the way of God’s children – because Plutonians need no countercultural trappings, no doctrines or causes or poses to fall back on as the raison d’etre of their existence. They just are, and that is all there is to it. It is difficult to hassle them about anything creedal or ethnic; they won’t want to argue back out of consideration for your own blood pressure. This innate air of naivete makes them seem to invite aggression by others, which is why it is said that upbeat Plutonians are born targets for romantic and erotic overtures – and sometimes forcible molestation.”
