How to interpret a Sidereal Solar Return

Recommended protocol for analyzing a
Sidereal Solar Return (SSR)

  1. Note which planets (both natal and SSR) are foreground in the SSR. Frame the core of your delineation around these factors alone, trying to come to some kind of integrated assessment of the map's general tone.
    1. If the same planet is foreground in both the natal (inner) and SSR (outer) wheels, it takes on special significance as a theme planet.
    2. The planets closest to the angles have the most to say. While the entire map has to fit together synthetically, this guidance often will help prioritize and weight planetary involvement.
    3. SSR planets are interpreted as describing circumstances the world brings to the individual. Natal planets represent the individual's reactions to these circumstances or, sometimes, the actions which invoke them.
  2. Note aspects between/among foreground planets (preferably 3° orb, possibly extending to 5° if there are few aspects)
    1. Aspects to foreground SSR planets help refine judgment on what to expect from the outside world.
    2. Interpret foreground natal planets in terms of what they represent in the nativity (shown by their natal aspects and, to some extent, sign placements).
    3. Note foreground SSR (transiting) planets aspecting foreground natal planets (i.e., transits to the natal).
  3. Interpret aspects of SSR Moon to both SSR and natal planets.
    1. If foreground or middleground, give its aspects full priority.
    2. If background, only consider its indices if the rest of the chart points in the same direction.
    3. All partile aspects (1° orb or less) are worth noting, regardless of cadency.
  4. Stop at this point to make sure the delineation is consistent and makes sense.
  5. Observe which SSR planets are background and how they color the picture so far obtained.
  6. Interpret aspects of the Sun to SSR planets.
    1. Remember that this is identical to natal Sun.
    2. If foreground, give full priority to its aspects.
    3. If middleground, only consider its indices if the rest of the chart concurs.
    4. If background, forget it altogether.
    5. Partile aspects, however, are an exception, and always potent.
  7. Consider any remaining aspects within about 1°. These represent supplementary, background considerations.
