Hurricane Irma [Hurricane]

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 09, 2017 4:48 pm

(starting a thread)

Barbuda landfall: September 6, 2017, 1:47 AM (Category 5)
Cuba landfall: September 8, 2017, late (estimate 11 PM?), on Camaguey Archipelago, Category 5
Florida landfall: September 10, 2017, just after 9 AM EDT, Cudjoe Key (Category 4) [24N40 81W29 for the Key]

Here is the evolving Wikipedia article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Irma

Death toll and damages still to be assessed (and, as of this writing, are substantially still to occur). This storm developed incredibly fast, accelerating between Category 3 and 5 repeatedly, and may still continue to fluctuate before it hits Florida (perhaps tomorrow). Peak winds thus far were 185 mph. (Of Atlantic hurricanes, only Hurricane Allen in 1980 surpassed this, with 305 mph winds.)

Comparisons are being made to the Labor Day hurricane from 1935, analyzed in SMA. It nearly eradicated Barbuda, and has caused catastrophic damage elsewhere across the eastern Caribbean,

Hurricane Irma - Florida

I was hoping for a more exact timing of the first landfall, but that is more for academic purposes. For our analytic purposes, it doesn't matter much. Here are the available data for first U.S. landfall:

September 10, 2017, just after 9 AM EDT, Cudjoe Key
Cudjoe Key is 24N40 81W29. I'll use 9:00 AM. (Pluto crossed the local IC at 9:26 AM.)

Hurricane Irma - Cuba

I was hoping for a more exact timing of the first landfall, but that is more for academic purposes. For our analytic purposes, it doesn't matter much. Here are the available data for Cuba landfall:

September 8, 2017, late, Camaguey Archipelago [23N00, 80W00]
Use 11 PM as a reasonable estimate. These re crude geographical coordinates, but probably sufficient. (Do not confuse with the city of Camaguey, which is deep inland.)

The island is small. I'm using the coordinates of its capital, Codrington

The hurricane's eye crossed the island the minute Pluto was setting. Reportedly, 95% of all structures were demolished.

Irma has degraded to Category 3, and just made a second landfall - Marco Island on Florida's west coast - about 3:35 PM Eastern Time.
