Deadliest Tornadoes

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun Nov 19, 2017 1:05 am

I'm going to take another crack at tornadoes. When I studied them before, I focused on the strongest (all F5 category). Based on those results and other kinds of disasters, I think I should, instead, look at the highest death toll.

Tornadoes are particularly difficult to study because they tend to cover very large areas, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles. This makes it difficult to find a single time and place. I've tried, in the list below, to identify the place of highest impact and damage (generally highest loss of life). I have the 10 deadliest tornadoes in world history, and a couple of extras that were nearly as bad and had good data.

WORST TORNADOES BY DEATH TOLL
The 10-15 deadliest tornadoes for which I can get at least a specific place and date

1. Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado
April 26, 1989, 18:25 LT, Dhaka, Bangladesh (from Daulatpur to Saturia)
$1.5M in damages, about 1,300 deaths
Deadliest in world history

2. Great Tri-State Tornado of 1925
March 18, 1925
695 deaths
Deadliest in U.S. history, longest ever recorded in the world
Reached from SE Missouri into SW Indiana
Other tornadoes the same day in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, and Kansas
Beginning in Ellington, MO at 12:40 PM, it reached to Petersburg, IN
First fatality 1:01 PM near Ellington, MO
Obliterated Gorham, IL at 2:26 PM
234 people died in Murphysboro, IL (the highest concentration in one place), where a mile-wide swath was cut that essentially obliterated the town (contact at 2:34 PM)

3. Manikganj, Singair, & Newabganj, Bangladesh
April 17, 1973, No time found, these are parts of Dhaka
681 died (unofficially over 1,000). In particular, the village of Balurchar was completely destroyed.

4. 1969 East Pakistan Tornado
April 14, 1969, Dhaka, Bangladesh – no time given
660 deaths

5. Grand Harbour of Malta Tornado (Valletta)
September 23, 1551 (some sources say 1556), Grand Harbour, Malta
600 deaths (deadliest in European history)

6. Magura & Narail Districts, Bangladesh
April 11, 1964
500 deaths (maybe as high as 1,400), seven villages obliterated
In particular, everyone in the village of Bhabanipur (400) died

7. Sicily Tornado
December 8, 1851 near Marsala, Sicily
Date seems uncertain: One source says early December or possibly late November; but the reporting of the tornado dated from December 8
500 died - the area worst hit was Castellamare (half the town was destroyed, about 200 people died)

8. Madaripur & Shibchar, Bangladesh
April 1, 1977, Madaripur & Shibchar (all buildings & trees were destroyed in these two cities)
500 deaths

9. 1984 Ivanovo Tornado Outbreak
June 9, 1984
Belyanitsky, Ivanovo, & Balino, Russia
400 deaths
Tornadoes were reported from as early as 9L00 AM. This, the largest and deadliest, originated at 11:30 AM south of Ivanovo

10. Great Natchez Tornado
May 7, 1840,shortly before 1:00 PM, Natchez, MS
317 deaths (maybe as many more slave deaths, but these weren’t counted)
$1.26M in damages, 2nd deadliest in U.S. history; many of the deaths were further along its path

1. Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun Nov 19, 2017 1:09 am

April 26, 1989, 6:25 PM LT (Zone -6), Dhaka, Bangladesh (from Daulatpur to Saturia)
$1.5M in damages, about 1,300 deaths
Deadliest in world history

Dhaka is 23N45, 90E24. Daulatpur is 23N58 and 89E50. Saturia is 23N58, 90E02. They're all in essentially the same spot, so I'll use Dhaka (which also is the national capital, and appropriate for such a national disaster).

Reaction: Wow, this is pretty damn good for the worst tornado in history! (Lunar ingresses aren't worth much.)

2. Great Tri-State Tornado of 1925

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun Nov 19, 2017 9:16 am

March 18, 1925, 2:34 PM CST, Murphysboro, IL
695 deaths (deadliest in U.S. history, longest ever recorded in the world)
Reached from in Ellington, MO (12:40 PM) to Petersburg, IN

Obliterated Gorham, IL at 2:26 PM

Saturn and Neptune were on angles (Saturn sq. Asc very close) as the twister hit Murphysboro. Moon had just left a partile opposition to Pluto, and a Moon-Mercury-Pluto T-square had been active for several hours and, as shown below, played a big role in the final timing. Overall, my impression from these first two (deadliest) tornadoes is that Neptue (chaotic, spinning, madness Neptune) is the main player.

3. Manikganj, Singair, & Newabganj, Bangladesh Tornado

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun Nov 19, 2017 9:44 am

April 17, 1973, No time found (use noon), Dhaka
681 died (unofficially over 1,000). In particular, the village of Balurchar was completely destroyed. Notice that all of these cities in Dhaka province are in the same degree of longitude and latitude as Dhaka proper.

A Full Moon occurred that evening, so the tides were more extreme. The most acute aspect of the day was a Mercury-Pluto opposition. Best estimation (without a time) is that Moon had entered Libra. Notice that these charts, though generally responsive and descriptive, don't have the sharpness and consistency of the two prior examples.

For comparison, we need to check the other year (since historic records are mixed).
September 23, 1556, use noon, Valletta, Malta

I must say that I am quite convinced that this, and not the earlier year, is the correct year. Look especially at the lunar ingresses and daily indicators!

7. Sicily Tornado

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sun Nov 19, 2017 6:25 pm

December 8, 1851, no time found, near Marsala, Sicily
Date seems uncertain: One source says early December or possibly late November; but the reporting of the tornado dated from December 8
500 died - the area worst hit was Castellammare (half the town was destroyed, about 200 people died)

There is some question about the date. This probably won't affect anything until the final day. We'll run with it as if December 8 is known to be accurate. I will use Castellammare, 38N02, 12E53, CET.

2011 Alabama tornado outbreak [Tornado]

Post by Jim Eshelman » Wed Nov 29, 2017 1:18 pm

Alabama's deadliest natural disaster was a tornado "super outbreak" April 25-28, 2011, Tornado Outbreak.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Outbreak
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tusc ... am_tornado

Over these three days, there were 352 confirmed tornadoes., 348 people died, over 2,200 were injuries, and about $11B worth of property damage occurred.

April 27 was the most active tornado day (218 individual tornadoes that day, four of them EF5). An exceptionally large, destructive tornado hit Tuscaloosa about 5:10 PM (this seems to be the central event to use; Steve said it was clearly the worst hit, by a large margin), and 40 minutes later the same one hit Birmingham.

April 27, 2011, 5:10 PM, Tuscaloosa, AL. Do not miss the Arisolar!

Glazier-Higgins-Woodward tornadoes [Tornado]

Post by Jim Eshelman » Wed Nov 29, 2017 1:18 pm

Oklahoma's deadliest natural disaster was the Glazier-Higgins-Woodward tornadoes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_Glaz ... _tornadoes
http://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/mwr/075 ... 4-0070.pdf

April 9, 1947, 8:43 PM, Woodward, OK. (The time is from the NOAA document linked above.)

181 died, 980 injured. Damage over $10.5M. Though there were 8-12 tornadoes in the region that day, "Most of the damage and all the deaths are still blamed on one large F5 tornado, known as the Glazier-Higgins-Woodward Tornado, that traveled nearly 125 miles from Texas to Oklahoma." As an Oklahoma event, the worst impact was Woodward, where most of the town was devastated and 107 people died. In Woodward, "the tornado was two miles wide and destroyed 100 city blocks."

1999 Salt Lake City tornado [Tornado]

Post by Jim Eshelman » Wed Nov 29, 2017 1:19 pm

Utah's deadliest natural disaster, and one of the strangest in various ways, is the 1999 Salt Lake City tornado.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Salt ... ty_tornado

August 11, 1999, 12:41-12:55 PM MDT, an F2 tornado passed through downtown Salt Lake City. The event is Important not only because it was Utah's deadliest natural disaster, but because tornadoes are rare in Utah; and it was "the first major tornado to occur in a major urban area's downtown district and strike [tall] buildings." (It was "during an unusually strong summer monsoon season." Cloud cover in the morning intensified "until nearly all light was obscured." Winds remained calm. Then, at 12:41 PM, hail 1.5" hit nearby areas, "the storm started rotating, and at around 1:00 PM., many people reported seeing the storm rotate... as it moved into downtown Salt Lake City.")

1 death, over 100 injuries, $170M damage. - Overall, I'm not very impressed with this event except for the Week chart, though it does resemble "disasters" where loss of life etc. is very small.

NOTE: A New Moon occurred a few hours earlier, at 5:08:30 AM. For everywhere on earth, it was square a partile (2') Mars-Saturn conjunction. A Mercury-Neptune opposition falls across the horizon. This isn't a bad chart for a "wind makes me crazy, and it's violent" kind of event.

Great Plains Tornado Outbreak of 1955 [Tornado]

Post by Jim Eshelman » Wed Nov 29, 2017 1:19 pm

Kansas' deadliest natural disaster was the Great Plains Tornado Outbreak of 1955.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Grea ... o_outbreak

The worst hit was Udall, KS, where the tornado hit about 10:30 PM CDT on May 26, 1955, killing or injuring half the town. 80 people died and there was much destruction (details in the article).

Altogether, 46 tornadoes hit seven plains states May 25-26, 1955.

For Udall, I'm going to mark this dormant - it technically is - though for surrounding areas it was not. Here are relevant factors, the first two just outside the hot zone.
