Manilius on extra-zodiacal constellations

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 02, 2017 6:10 pm

In the Astronomicon, Manilius constellations that are parantellon which, in the original sense, meant "co-rising;" i.e., non-zodiacal (more properly, extra-zodiacal) constellations that rise at the time of birth.

His astronomy is notoriously horrible. Most of the locations he gives are wrong (when he sais a constellation rises with such-and-so a degree). Among the factors applying here are:

1. His zodiac (the VP = 10° Aries Tropical zodiac) was 3° earlier than the Sidereal zodiac.

2. The constellations are too wide to rise only at a simple degree.

3. These, if right in all other respects, will vary with latitude, and vary again over the centuries due to precession.

4. Besides all that, he was simply often wrong.

Nonetheless, his text may be of interest in its own right, especially in terms of providing 1st Century interpretations of the natures of these constellations. These give us a basis for examining the stars in them, and comparing to, say, Ptolemy's planet-based descriptions of the stars. It may also be that these natal constellational parantellonta are of value in their own right, although my main purpose now is just to harvest the interpretations for general application to the constellations.

Manilius mentioned BTW that these are the influences both when the constellations are rising and setting - anyplace on the horizon.

You'll now when I'm done when I get to the Pisces parans, ending with Cetus.

Argo, the Ship (Aries)

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 02, 2017 6:20 pm

(Ptolemy: the bright stars like Saturn & Jupiter)

Lord of the flock and conqueror of the sea, to which, a horn lost and robbed even of its fleece, it gave its burden an a name, the Ram, which bade the magic arts of Colchian Medea journey to Iolcos and spread her poisons throughout the world, even now draws Argo by the poop its side, as though still on the seas, through the stars on its right. But the foremost part of the poop emerges to show its fires only when the Ram has brought four degrees of his countenance above the horizons. Whoever is born on earth at the rising of Argo will be the captain of a ship; holding fst to his helm, he will forsake dry land for the sea and pursue his fortune with the winds; he will crave to traverse the entire ocean with his fleet, visit foreign climes, and the deep Phasis, and better the speed of Tiphys towards the rocks. Take away the births of men situate beneath this constellation, and you will take away the Trojan war and the fleet which both set sail and made landfall with bloodshed; then will no Xerxes launch Persia on the on the main or open up a new sea but cover over the old; no reversal of Salamis at Syracuse will overwhelm Athens, nor will Punic prows ride every sea, the world within Actium's bays hang in the balance between opposing forces, and heaven's destiny float at the mercy of the waves. Men born under Argo are the guides who guide our ships over the trackless deep; it is through them that land meets land and the whole world's wares are summoned with the winds to supply men's diverse needs.

Orion (Aries)

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 02, 2017 6:43 pm

(Ptolemy: the stars in the shoulders resemble Mars & Mercury; the other bright stars are similar to Jupiter & Saturn)

But when Orion on the left doth rise,
Orion the large Portion of the Skies;
At whose appearance Day the Night invades,
And frightened Darkness folds her Gloomy Shades:
One fit for Business, quick of Mind is wrought,
As if he were the People, all the Town
He shall Inhabit, every House his own:
And the Salute, when Morning peeps, extend
Through every Street, to All a Common Friend.

Henionchus, the Driver [Auriga] (Aries)

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 02, 2017 6:55 pm

But when the Ram first shows thrice five Degree,
The Driver rears his Chariot from the Seas;
And climbs that Steep, whence blustering Boreas brings
His North-East Blasts, and shakes their freezing Wings.
He keep his old Concern and thence bestows
Those various Arts which here on earth he chose.
To drive the Chariot, to direct the Course,
And hang with forward Lashes on the Horse;
Now press directly, now wheel nimbly round,
Out-strip the Wind, nor raise the dusty Ground:
Or cross athwart, and force the rest to yield,
Disperse the Crowd, and clear the gapeing field;
And tho' outstript, yet scorn to stoop to Fear,
But drive on Hope, and leave behind Despair.

O midst the Race from Horse to Horse to leap,
Sport o'er their Backs, and fix the dangerous step:
Or Singly mounted break the Foaming Jaws,
Throw well the Dart, and force a Just applause.

Hence influenc't at his Birth Salmoneus strove
To vye with Lightning, and to Rival Jove;
His Brazen Bridge, and Chariots fiercely hurl'd
Must raor like Thunder, and must shake the World.
Vain the attempt: But yet his Pride was high,
And now he thought he had brought down the Sky!
Proudly he rode, but winged Bolts pursue,
And his feign'd Thunder's noise provok'd the True:
He fell, and by his sad Example she'd
'Twas Fate for Man, to be esteemed a God.
The fam'd Bellerophon first view'd the Light
When This appear'd, and took his Aery Flight:
O're Seas and Land he fled, and first began
Through patheless Skies, a way unknown to Man.
