Mounte Toc landslide

Post by Jim Eshelman » Wed Oct 09, 2019 12:00 pm

October 9, 1963, 10:39 PM, Monte Toc 46N14, 12E20
http://www.environmentandsociety.org/ar ... vajont-dam

Monte Toc, Italy's "walking mountain," has long been known for landslides. On the above date, 250 million cubic meters of rock slid down its surface into the Vajont Dam reservoir, creating a tsunami 250 meters high that wiped Longarone (46N16, 12E18) and adjacent towns.

1,918 died (1,450 of them in Longarone). Calculations below are for Longarone. The landslide occurred as Moon, exactly on the ecliptic, crossed the eastern horizon so there probably was a gravitational contribution.
