Guatelmala (Volcán de Fuego) volcano eruption

June 3, 2018, 11:55 AM CST, 14N28'29", 90W52'51"

NOTE: These charts are calculated for a slightly wrong time. All reports now agree with "just before noon" and "about noon," so I suspect 11:55 AM CST is what should be used for this going forward, instead of the 4:55 originally used.

Another volcanic eruption and, at least in the short run, one that is worse than the Hawaiian eruption. Volcan de Fuego ("fire volcano") in Guatemala erupted yesterday, killing at least 113 [Update: 159] people, injuring 57 others (with 332 still missing [UPATE: 256]), and causing wide fear and destruction. (Descriptions of "lava pouring through the corn fields" are dominating this morning's volcano news.) Water contamination is an issue. Volcanic mudflow buried a village, killing residents. Evacuations exceed 30,000 and (I'm not sure what this number means) the eruption "will affect 1.7 million people."

This volcano has been active many times since the 16th century. The current activity period began in 2002, and yesterday's eruption is described as the "its most powerful eruption since 1974."

The charts are exceptional, with the CapQ being exactly (exactly!) what we'd have predicted (in fact, what I did expect before I calculated it).
