Santa Cruz Island Boat Fire

Post by Jupiter Sets at Dawn » Mon Sep 02, 2019 9:24 am

3:30 AM call from 75' Diving Vessel with 39 people aboard, engulfed in flames. It sank 20 yards offshore in 64' of water off Platts Harbor, on the north side of Santa Cruz Island.

5 people, all crew members, evacuated (on a pleasure boat named the Grape Escape.) All crew were awake and able to jump off. Passengers were asleep below.

34 people are missing. A half dozen fire departments are working with the Coast Guard. It's probably a recovery now, not a rescue. They are searching for people who may have made it to shore.

Hurricane Dorian

Post by Jim Eshelman » Mon Sep 02, 2019 2:51 pm

September 1, 2019, 16:40 UT, Elbow Cay, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas (26N32, 76W58)

Hurricane Dorian peaked at Category 5 with one-minute sustained winds of 185 mph at the time of its first landfall, which occurred in Elbow Cay, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas. We have few detailed reports so far - surely an indication that electricity and communication channels are flattened on the island - but it appears that this strike has caused massive destruction as the Category 5 designation suggests. Flooding has now begun, with Grand Bahama International Airport underwater as of 7:00 UT today (9/2).

A second landfall was made September 2, 2:00 UT, on Grand Bahama Island. Dorian has since weakened to Category 4. UPDATE 9/3: The storm has mostly sat on top of Grand Bahama Island since it hit, at least for a day and a half. The Grand Bahama Airport is under 6 feet of water.

In the wake of extensive flooding, five people have died so far. The story of this hurricane is likely far from over, but we can study its first landfall.

I saw this news flash this morning as we were driving south through Ventura County along the coast. I looked for something bright or burning out in the water, but the fog (as usual) was far too dense to see very far off shore.

Per LA Times, this counts as "one of California's worst maritime disasters in decades." Apparently the crew first noticed the fire "in the dark," so probably before sunrise. I woke while it was barely hinting at getting light not far from there a few minutes after 6 AM, so "in the dark" sounds like 5:30 AM or earlier.

Ah, the mayday call was 3:15 AM per NY Times. [UPDATE: Coast Guard officials say the fire started at 3:14 AM which matches this.] The boat, Conception, was moored in Platts Harbor, north of Santa Cruz Island. [UPDATE: Reports now say it wasn't docked, but was "at open sea," presumably near the harbor.] By the time we were on the road, it was past the active burn stage and "smouldering," and it sank a bit later. Of the 39 people on board, five crew members escaped, eight people are currently known to be dead, and the other 26 are missing and presumed dead. UPDATE 9/3: 25 are now confirmed dead, I expect the final number to be 34.

The fire itself was surely a bit earlier than this, but 3:15 AM is the only time we have to work with so I'll use it. The harbor is at 34N02'51'', 119W44'06''. At the time of the mayday, Saturn and Pluto had recently passed angles. Moon had just left partile orb of square to Pluto, while Sun was partile conjunct Mars for the day,

CANSOLAR: The area had been vulnerable since the Cansolar set up July 17 (and the surrounding area in Santa Barbara County remains perilously vulnerable to fire). Mars is 2°00' past MC, Uranus 1°22' past Dsc, Moon on IC squares Uranus closely (0°19') and opposes Mars more widely (3°51' in mundo).

CAPLUNAR: Saturn is 1°18' from MC with Moon exactly square Asc (0°33').

TRANSITS TO CAPSOLAR: Transiting Mars and Sun are 0°01' from exact conjunction and within 2° of Capsolar MC.

Alabama teen slays family

Post by Jim Eshelman » Tue Sep 03, 2019 9:12 am

September 2, 2019, 10:30 PM, Elkmont, AL

A 14-year-old boy killed five members of his family (father, step-mother, and three siblings) last night then surrendered to police. He called 911, saying he was in the basement when he heard gunfire upstairs, but by 3:00 AM he had confessed.

Tenaja fire

Post by Jim Eshelman » Thu Sep 05, 2019 9:25 am

September 4, 2019, reported 3:56 PM, La Cresta, CA

Fire season has seriously begun in Southern California. This one burst across 1,000 acres overnight near Murrieta, CA, and at least 1,400 so far, with almost no containment. Mandatory evacuation orders with encouragement for others to leave.

Orange Countty Register says it began in La Cresta, though it is broadly being called a Murrieta fire. The time it was sighted/reported had Saturn exactly rising.

As in all recent years, the CAPSOLAR for the region has an exactly angular Neptune (less than a degree from IC), though this year it is squared by Jupiter. For La Cresta, though, the CANSOLAR has Mars 0°13' from square Asc.

The only non-dormant lunar ingress is the ARILUNAR with Uranus exactly setting (typical of "flash wildfires").

For the DAY, CapQ MC conjoined transiting Uranus, but the big one - which will only get worse in the next couple of days - is transiting Sun-Mercury-Mars conjoined just off Capsolar MC. (I'm not eager for Mars to oppose Capsolar Neptune from its MC in a few days.)

Hurricane Dorian U.S. landfall

September 6, 2019, 8:35 AM, Cape Hattaras, Outer Banks, NC

Dorian made landfall an hour and a half ago on the Outer Banks, at 8:35 AM according to NY Times. (My original prediction of where would have much more accurate if those damn islands weren't in the way :).)

EF-2 tornado rips through Sioux Falls, SD

Post by Jupiter Sets at Dawn » Wed Sep 11, 2019 10:15 am

September 10, 2019, 11:28 p.m., Sioux Falls, SD
One, possibly two, unusual tornados touched down, damaging and collapsing both homes and businesses. The local hospital was severely damaged. The roads were closed till just a few minutes ago (just before Noon) because of the debris and power lines down.

This was an unusual storm in that the tornado(s) were formed at the front of the storm instead of at the rear, so there was almost no warning - just what's that noise? Grab the kids!! Run for the cellar!! So while a few people were hurt, it's amazing nobody was killed. Sioux Falls suffered severe floods a couple years ago, and rebuilt buildings were required to adhere to much stricter codes. (That worked!)

Yemeni drone attacks on Saudi Arabia

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 14, 2019 8:37 pm

September 14, 2019, 4:00 AM (1:00 GMT), Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia (25N56, 49E40)

Yemeni Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, blasted two important Saudi oil installations in Abqaiq with drones, sites that process more than half of Saudi crude oil. (This, of course, will cause critical oil shortages and raised prices.)

The time of 4 AM is when Al-Jazeera said the security teams started dealing with the fires. The attack was probably at least a little earlier. (UPDATE: 9/17 NYT gave 3:30 AM.)

UAW strike

Post by Jim Eshelman » Mon Sep 16, 2019 7:29 am

United Auto Workers went out on strike last night - the first time that industry has done so in 12 years.

My main point in posting this: Think Jupiter-Neptune (which are back in partile square). Historic records show numerous high-profile strikes occur during major Jupiter-Neptune aspects. Early this year, for example, we had a stream of teacher strikes, the first such wave in a long time - and now this one, pretty much on schedule.
